In Nigeria, your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated by multiplying the credit units of each course by the grade points earned, summing all the resulting quality points, and dividing by the total credit units.

Formula:

GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Units

Your CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the average of all your semester GPAs. Add all semester GPAs together and divide by the number of semesters completed.

Formula:

CGPA = Sum of Semester GPAs ÷ Number of Semesters

Grade Points: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, F=0

Many students are unsure of how to calculate their GPA and CGPA, and some wait until the final year to check their CGPA, only to be surprised by the result.

Scholarjoiner explains everything in a simple way that you will understand. No confusing formula.

By the end of this tutorial, you will actually learn and master how to calculate your GPA and CGPA manually, and also understand how Nigerian schools grade students.

What Is GPA?

GPA (Grade Point Average) is the average of your grades for one semester.

In a simple term, GPA answers one specific question:

“How did I perform in this particular semester?”

GPA is calculated using:

Your course units

Your grades

Your school’s grading scale (usually 5.0 or 4.0)

Nigeria Grading Scale

Most Nigerian universities use the 5.0 grading system, while some private universities and colleges use 4.0.

Let’s first understand the Nigerian Grading system from the secondary school to the university level.

High schools or secondary schools follow a standardized scale, primarily from A to F.

Nigerian High School Grading Scale

Nigeria Grades English Terms Percentage Score % GPA
A1 Excellent 75% – 100% 4.0
B2 Very Good 70% – 74% 3.6
B3 Good 65% – 69% 3.2
C4 Credit 60% – 64% 2.8
C5 Credit 55% – 59% 2.4
C6 Credit 50% – 54% 2.0
D7 Pass 45% – 49% 1.6
E8 Pass 40% – 44% 1.2
F9 Fail 0% – 39% 0.0

5.0 Grading System (Most Federal & State Universities)

Nigeria Grades English Terms Percentage Score % GPA
A Excellent 70% – 100% 5.0
B Very Good 60% – 69% 4.0
C Good 50% – 59% 3.0
D Fair 45% – 49% 2.0
E Pass 40% – 44% 1.0
F Fail 0% – 39% 0.0

The Nigerian University uses a detailed grading scale that ranges from 5.0 to 0.0.

4.0 Grading System (Some Private Institutions)

Score (%) Grade Grade Point
70 – 100 A 4.0
60 – 69 B 3.0
50 – 59 C 2.0
45 – 49 D 1.0
0 – 44 F 0.0

Now that you’ve learn how the Nigerian grading system works, let’s calculate your GPA and CGPA.

How to Calculate GPA in Nigeria (Step-by-Step)

GPA Formula (One Semester):

GPA = Total Quality Points (Semester)
÷ Total Units (Semester)

To calculate your GPA for a semester, follow these steps:

Step 1: List Your Courses and Units

Example:

Course Unit Grade Grade Point
MTH 101 3 A 5
ENG 101 2 B 4
PHY 101 3 C 3
CHM 101 2 B 4

Step 2: Multiply Units by Grade Points

Course Unit Grade Point Unit × GP
MTH 101 3 5 15
ENG 101 2 4 8
PHY 101 3 3 9
CHM 101 2 4 8
Total Quality Points 40

Step 3: Divide by Total Units

Total Units = 3 + 2 + 3 + 2 = 10

GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Units

GPA = 40 ÷ 10 = 4.00

How to Calculate CGPA in Nigeria

CGPA is calculated using all your semesters.

CGPA Formula:

CGPA = Total Quality Points (All Semesters)
÷ Total Units (All Semesters)
SemesterTotal UnitsTotal Quality Points
Year 1 – Sem 12078
Year 1 – Sem 22284
Year 2 – Sem 12180

Example CGPA Calculation

Total Units = 63

Total Quality Points = 242

CGPA = 242 ÷ 63 = 3.84

CGPA Class of Degree in Nigeria (5.0 Scale

CGPA Class of Degree
4.50 – 5.00 First Class
3.50 – 4.49 Second Class Upper (2:1)
2.40 – 3.49 Second Class Lower (2:2)
1.50 – 2.39 Third Class
1.00 – 1.49 Pass
0.00 – 0.99 Fail

Common Mistakes Students Make

  • Ignoring course units
  • Using wrong grading scale
  • Forgetting failed courses (F counts as 0)
  • Estimating instead of calculating

Even one mistake can change your class of degree.

Should You Calculate Manually or Use a Calculator?

Manual calculation helps you understand your result, but calculators:

  • Save time
  • Reduce errors
  • Help with many semesters
