Use the formula below to calculate your GPA for a semester:
GPA Formula:
GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Course Units
Where:
- Total Quality Points = Sum of (Course Unit × Grade Point for each course)
- Total Course Units = Sum of all course units taken in the semester
Example Calculation:
| Course | Score | Grade | Grade Point | Unit | Quality Points (Unit × Grade Point) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MTH101 | 75 | A | 5 | 3 | 15 |
| ENG102 | 65 | B | 4 | 2 | 8 |
| PHY103 | 58 | C | 3 | 3 | 9 |
Step 1: Calculate Total Quality Points = 15 + 8 + 9 = 32
Step 2: Calculate Total Units = 3 + 2 + 3 = 8
Step 3: GPA = 32 ÷ 8 = 4.0
How to Calculate CGPA in Nigeria
Use the formula below to calculate your cumulative GPA (CGPA) across multiple semesters:
CGPA Formula:
CGPA = Sum of (Semester GPA × Semester Units) ÷ Total Units Across All Semesters
Where:
- Semester GPA × Semester Units = Quality Points for each semester
- Total Units Across All Semesters = Sum of all course units taken in all semesters
Example Calculation:
| Semester | Total Units | GPA | Semester Quality Points (Units × GPA) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year 1 – Sem 1 | 15 | 4.0 | 60 |
| Year 1 – Sem 2 | 18 | 3.5 | 63 |
| Year 2 – Sem 1 | 17 | 4.2 | 71.4 |
Step 1: Calculate Total Quality Points = 60 + 63 + 71.4 = 194.4
Step 2: Calculate Total Units = 15 + 18 + 17 = 50
Step 3: CGPA = 194.4 ÷ 50 = 3.888
