How to Calculate GPA in Nigeria

Most Nigerian Universities and Polytechnics use the NUC 5.0 Grading System. Calculating your GPA involves two main numbers: your Total Grade Points and your Total Units.

The Formula

GPA = Total Grade Points (TGP) ÷ Total Units (TNU)

Note: Grade Points are calculated by multiplying your Score Grade (e.g., A=5) by the Course Unit.

Standard Grading Scale:

  • A (70-100%) = 5 pts
  • B (60-69%) = 4 pts
  • C (50-59%) = 3 pts
  • D (45-49%) = 2 pts
  • E (40-44%) = 1 pt
  • F (0-39%) = 0 pts

Example Calculation:

Imagine a student taking 3 courses in a semester. Here is how their result is calculated:

Course CodeScoreGradePoint (A)Unit (B)Total Points (A × B)
MTH 10175A5315
ENG 10265B428
PHY 10358C339
TOTALS:8 Units32 Points

Final Step: Divide Points by Units

GPA = 32 (Points) ÷ 8 (Units) = 4.00

This result means the student is on a Second Class Upper (2:1) standing for this semester.

How to Calculate CGPA in Nigeria

Your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is the average of all your semesters combined. It determines your final class of degree (First Class, Second Class, etc.).

The CGPA Formula

CGPA = Total Grade Points (All Semesters) ÷ Total Units (All Semesters)

Tip: You cannot just add your GPAs together and divide by 2. You must weight them by the Units taken.

Example Calculation:

Let’s calculate the CGPA for a student moving into their second year (Year 2, Semester 1):

SemesterTotal Units (A)Semester GPA (B)Total Points (A × B)
Year 1 – Sem 1154.0060.0
Year 1 – Sem 2183.5063.0
Year 2 – Sem 1174.2071.4
CUMULATIVE:50 Units194.4 Points

Step 1: Sum of Total Points = 60 + 63 + 71.4 = 194.4

Step 2: Sum of Total Units = 15 + 18 + 17 = 50

Step 3 (Final Result):
CGPA = 194.4 ÷ 50 = 3.89

(Rounded to 2 decimal places)

🎉 Verdict: With a CGPA of 3.89, this student is firmly in the Second Class Upper (2:1) division.
