Press Statement at WAEC National Office Lagos.

Dr Amos Dangut, the head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, stated briefly at the Council’s national headquarters in Yaba, Lagos, that the 2025 WAEC examination and preparation was a huge success.

He noted that the examination body experienced logistical and operational challenges.

The national official added that candidates’ poor performance in the 2025 WAEC was due to the examination body serialising objective test papers in core subjects like English language, Mathematics, Economics, and Biology.

The West African Examinations Council noted that only 38.32 per cent obtained credits and above in five major subjects including Mathematics and English language.

More than 1.9 million candidates sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) across 23,554 Schools, and only 754,545 obtained a minimum of five credits, including English and Mathematics.

The Council recorded 72.12 per cent in 2024, while in 2025, it recorded 38.32 per cent, with a drop of 33.8 per cent.

Dr Amos noted that the decline was part of the Council’s strategy to reduce examination malpractice.

“This approach drastically reduced the incidence of collusion and made examination malpractice more difficult”

“We observed a dip in the performance of objective papers, but essay papers remained consistent with previous years. It’s a strong signal that candidates must rely on their own preparation” He added.

The Council held the WAEC examination between April 24 and June 20, 2025. WAEC officials announced results on 4th August after deploying a real-time scoring system during marking time.
